  • Immediate family

    For a given person, anyother person is a member of the immediate family if he or she is any of the following to the given person: mother, father, brother, sister, grand father, grand mother, uncle*, aunt*, cousin**, husband, wife, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, mother-in law, father-in-law, nephew***, neice*** or grand-children****.

    * siblings of the given person's father or mother

    ** children of the siblings of the given person's father or mother

    *** children of the given person's siblings or cousins or the given person's husband or wife's siblings or cousins

    **** children of a given person's chidren, nephews or neices

    DISAMBIGUATION: members of immediate family is not to be mistaken for members identified as a family for the purposes of assesment of taxable income thresholds/social security eligibility.

  • Extended family

    All relatives who are not immediate relatives are members of the extended family

  • Friend

    For a given person, another person is a friend if the given person can count on the other person's understanding of one or more of the given person's intent in one or more aspects of his or her life.
